Optical Technologies Fundamentals (OTF)

Course Description Schedule Course Outline

Course Overview

The Optical Technology Fundamentals (OTF) course is an optical training course which provides an entry level training for all Cisco optical equipment trainings. Through the classroom instruction students get all the optical knowledge required for all other Cisco equipment courses. The OTF course is recommended as the first training course in the Cisco optical course track. The Optical Technology Fundamentals (OTF) course enables the students to become familiar with the fundamental concepts of optical technologies. During the instructor guided exercises they will be able to understand the principles of the operation of optical equipment.

Who should attend

This course is a necessity for technicians responsible for setting up and operating the DWDM or SONET/SDH optical network. Targeted roles include:

  • System engineers and Network operations engineers, who are involved in designing, operating and selling the optical networks.
  • Channel partners, resellers and customers are welcome to attend.

No prerequisite knowledge required.

Students benefit more from the training course if they have some theoretical or practical experience with optical networks and components.

Course Objectives

Upon completing this course, the learner will be able to meet these overall objectives:

  • Describe light and electromagnetic spectrum, frequencies, elements of transmission and optical power
  • Describe optical fiber parameters and types, connectors and splicing as well as cleaning
  • Describe DWDM optical architecture and components
  • Describe optical network design for capacity, distance, and applications as well as tools available
  • Describe SONET/SDH transmission rates, components, transmission segments and applications
  • Describe optical safety and measurement and testing equipment used in optical networks

Course Content

The Optical Technology Fundamentals (OTF) course gives students fundamental knowledge about the components of optical systems/networks and optical technologies. The students will learn the basics of light, standard ITU-T frequencies and fiber optics as well as linear and non-linear effects. The students will become familiar with the building blocks of optical transmission systems/networks. The course includes all components of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) networks, their design and tools needed for design. The course includes an overview of Synchronous Optical Network / Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SONET/SDH) standards, framing, protection, timing and services. This course teaches the knowledge and skills needed for optical safety, fiber cleaning and to describe technology features used in designing and implementing optical networks.
